The Private Eye - looking closely and thinking by analogy with jeweler's loupes and inquiry method for hands-on interdisciplinary science, art, writing, math, and more

The Private Eye and the
Portland Metro STEM Parnership

The Portland Metro STEM Partnership (PMSP) is one of seven STEM Hubs in Oregon. Since 2012 The Private Eye has been a collaborating partner.
In this unique collaboration The Private Eye offers its exemplary STEM course to teachers at the PMSP Teachers Summer Academy through Portland State University. 128 teachers K-8 have attended the graduate level, 3-credit course, and 41 teachers have attended the graduate level, 1-credit follow-up course. In 2015 Vernier Software and Technology, a major supporter of the Portland Metro STEM Parnership, offered its campus classroom to host the course. It was such a positive space the teachers created their own Private Eye inspired "thank you" notes in appreciation.

Course experience...
Teachers dive into the hands-on, interdsiciplinary Private Eye process for inquiry and investigation. Science, writing, art, math, and social studies come to life as students (and teachers) build the most important habits of mind to accelerate learning: looking closely, thinking by analogy, changing scale and theorizing/making inferences. The Private Eye makes it easy and natural for students to apply conceptual knowledge across subjects.

Teacher Impact...
Bubble Bag "The Private Eye changes the emphasis from that of a 'teacher centered' learning environment to that of a 'student centered' one.  I can’t wait to get started and feel that this class has reinvigorated my own interest in science and teaching science for good."
—Allyson Dubuque
"It was a perfect balance of information input, hands-on activities, and discussion. I found this class to be one of the most exciting and valuable that I have taken. I am especially excited about introducing the students (and my family) to a new way of thinking and looking at their world"
—Lisa Abramovic
Louping a tree trunk
STEM professional development "I loved the way Kerry walked the room as we had group discussions and wrote down all we were saying and then asked us questions and probed for deeper meaning.  The probing for deeper observation and making connections is going to be essential for my students."
—Sara Bryant
"I am glad to be reminded to look at the world with awe and wonder;  one big take-away from this class is being reminded how I myself enjoy learning…" —Molly Drenner

Student Impact...
Three teachers share their observations.

Chris Boyer: "It's had such a powerful effect. It really impacted their thinking."

Christine Campanella: "amazing growth in my students' analogy-making"

Mary Hall: "They are generalizing these Habits of Mind to everything we do."
Student Theorizing...
Sonya Wilson, teacher at Cooper Mountain Elementary, shared the work of second grade students. There's nothing like looking at bones (and a skull) close-up, and theorizing about life!
"It was a delight to witness how The Private Eye process makes it easy to teach the [essential] Habits of Mind, the CCSS, NGSS Practices and Crosscutting Concepts. Thank you for your passion to share this marvelous Private Eye process which fully engages children in learning in all subject areas."
—Sonya Wilson
